Teen Driver FAQs
What is the minimum age to start driving in NJ?
You can begin driving at 16 years old with a learner’s permit, but only through a licensed driving school. At 17, you can apply for an examination permit without enrolling in a school.
Do I need to go to driving school to get a permit?
Yes, if you're under 17, NJ law requires you to complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction through a licensed driving school to get your learner’s permit.
What’s included in the 6-hour behind-the-wheel program?
- Professional instruction with certified instructors.
- Dual-controlled vehicles for safety.
- Practice in city, suburban, and highway driving (when applicable).
- Certificate of completion for the NJMVC.
Road Test & Licensing
Can I use your car for the road test?
Yes! We offer road test packages that include:
- Use of our vehicle
- A pre-test refresher lesson
- Transportation to and from the test site
Do you offer the written (knowledge) test at your school?
Yes, we are authorized to administer the written test for students enrolled in our program, saving you a trip to the NJMVC.
How do I schedule my road or written test?
We’ll handle the scheduling for our enrolled students. If you’re not enrolled, you can schedule your test directly with the New Jersey MVC.
Pricing & Scheduling
How much does driving school cost in NJ?
Pricing depends on the package. Our 6-hour behind-the-wheel program typically ranges from $475–$600. We also offer customized lesson packages and adult driving lessons.
Do you offer pick-up and drop-off services?
Yes! We provide free pickup and drop-off for lessons within our service area. Contact us to confirm your location.
What happens if I miss a lesson?
We ask for 24-hour notice to reschedule. Cancellations made within 24 hours may incur a fee.
Adult & Refresher Driving
Do you offer adult driving lessons?
Absolutely. We provide lessons for first-time adult drivers and those who need a refresher before getting back on the road.
NJ-Specific Driving Rules
What is the GDL (Graduated Driver License) program?
New Jersey’s GDL program includes three stages:
- Learner’s Permit (16)
- Probationary License (17)
- Basic License (18+)
Each stage includes specific restrictions designed to keep new drivers safe.
Do I need to use the red decals (Kyleigh’s Law)?
Yes, if you're under 21 and hold a permit or probationary license, you are required to display red reflective decals on both license plates while driving.
